The Alliance of African Midwives (AAM) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization of midwives and other healthcare professionals dedicated to excellence in improving the health and education of women and children. We are committed to providing emotional, physical and knowledge based support for women and their families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period while promoting a positive birth experience.

Midwifery is both an art and a science. The art of midwifery consists of sensitivity to the needs of women and families, and being able to meet these needs in the most appropriate way. It involves knowing when and how to intervene to promote safety if it becomes necessary, and is grounded in scientific knowledge.

The organization includes midwives, doulas, childbirth professionals and consumers who foster unity among midwives with respect to differences in education and professional practices. The organization focuses on the African continent and offers useful information for midwives and student midwives at all levels.

Our Mission is working to strengthen the capacity of midwives in Africa to identify and meet the needs of the countries they serve.

Our Vision is to see better maternal and child health for the people of Africa.

Our Goal is to unify and strengthen midwives of Africa, thereby improving the quality of health care for women, babies, and communities in Africa.

We believe in the basic human rights of all persons, recognizing that women often incur an undue burden of risk when these rights are violated.

We are based in Cape Town and were fully registered (Registration No 088-057-NPO) with the South African government in March 2011.
