South African Private Midwives are involved in every aspect of a pregnant woman’s health, from pregnancy screening to post-delivery care and the provision of family planning and pap-smears to detect cervical cancer. Independent Midwives work in both public and private hospitals. In the past, midwives helped women give birth at home, but there are no longer enough of them for this to be possible.
